Q: Hey Nina! I know I need some support with some things I’m dealing with. I don’t know if I need a mentor, a coach or a counsellor. Can you tell me what the differences are, and how they can help me?
A: Great question! One of the things to be aware of is that you can use all three at the same time depending on what your situation is. Here’s a brief explanation on how each one can support you.
Mentor: is someone you align yourself with, who is where you want to be in your life. They can share their experiences with you, which can help you avoid some pitfalls and you can brainstorm with them etc. Basically they are someone you go to when you have questions.
Counsellor: is a professional who will help you work through past issues that are stopping you from moving forward. While we shouldn’t live in the past, sometimes we have to get professional help to understand the why of the past so we can move into the future.
Life Coach: is a professional who will support you with your forward movement. The coach gives you the space to explore who you want to be and how you are going to achieve this. A coach is your whiteboard, so to speak. They will ask the questions you may not be able to ask yourself. A coach will challenge your limiting beliefs, will support you in identifying your goals, creating a plan, and holding yourself accountable to what you want.
I hope this helps you to determine the direction you need to take. Insure you do your due diligence in finding the proper fit for your needs.
It’s my honour to serve you! God bless!
