Frankly speaking, I started this column eight weeks back with absolutely no plans of what to write. I just wanted to reach out to the readers and subscribers, who have supported our journey into the South Asian news market so well over the last few months. We’ve had huge social media responses and now with our freshly revamped website, thesouthasiannews.com, we are making gigantic hits in our statistics. (Please visit it if you haven’t already) This is indeed good news for us!
I always thought the media market is chocked in Canada. With barely any earth-shattering news happening in this peaceful, serene land, (other than a few seals getting murdered every spring), running a newspaper in Canada is a Herculean task. I particularly found it a daunting task, since I came from a country, India, which has been forever bubbling with news.
It’s a sadistic job being a journalist. You have to live off news. ‘No news’ is bad news for a newspaper, where people pore in everyday to get their glimpses about the world. More so, with the internet surge, the print media can barely keep its head bobbing over the water. Yet, big newspapers are still surviving in Canada, when a number of the print media is fading into oblivion in other countries.
Maybe it’s a good sign. Maybe it’s a sign that people still like holding their personal newspaper in their hands and carrying it with them wherever they go. Trust: a component built over time has kept The South Asian News ahead of its competitors in this stiff market.
We do hope to keep up this trust, and you can always write to me at kaberi@thesouthasinanews.com.
