India’s PM Modi Caught Between Development & Hindutva – Part 1

BJP a rightist Hindu political party of India, won majority in federal Parliament for the first time in 2014 and Narendra Modi, its leader took over as Prime Minister. Indian masses had pinned great hopes on him because during poll times he had assured them of economic growth, more jobs and promised to decelerate hard hitting price rise. Besides removing bribery and frauds from governance, he undertook to bring peace in Kashmir by adopting strong anti-terrorist measures.

But the funniest catchphrase that Narendra Modi and his acolytes then often used was to bring black money stashed in foreign banks back within 100 days of their rule and handing over 15 Lakhs of Rupees to each and every citizen of India. Nine months after Modi’s rule Anna Hazare, India’s celebrity campaigner against corruption lamented that, “Modi Sarkar had no intention to bring back black money….. leave alone 15 Lakhs, Indians haven’t received even Rupees 15”.

After BJP got exposed for making such frivolous claims, Amit Shah BJP President said, “Modiji’s statement was an idiomatic expression (Jumla) that was given during Lok Sabha Poll”.

What He said & What followed

After assuming power Modi came up with loftier Jumlas, some of these are given below.

He has said, “His government would have only one Religion–India first, one holy book–the constitution. Government must be immersed in only one Bhakti– Bharat Bhakti, Government’s only strength is Jan Shakti, Government’s only ritual is well being of the 125 crore Indians! The only code of conduct of the government should be Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” (Together with all, Development for all). Let us look at the way this government has been implementing these assurances literally in reverse direction:

On Price rise & Jobs: Most of the people with passage of two years of BJP rule feel bitter as they find prices of basic food items going up, instead of coming down as promised. If Arhar or tur dal the staple food in India is being sold around Rupees 190 per Kg, Rajma (Kidney beans) have moved beyond Rs 200 per Kg. Many vegetables are off the menu of the poor or lower middle class people that constitute majority in India. Recently opposition has coined a slogan “Arhar Modi” equivalents to “Ghar Ghar Modi” a tag that caught imagination of millions during federal polls 2014 when PM due to mere rhetoric was at top of his popularity.

The jobs, he assured are nowhere to be found except some at higher corporate tiers, and the existing one are under threat. Modi’s much hyped ‘Make in India’ emblem dangles upside down. His record breaking foreign tours have yielded nothing beyond entertaining Un-Indian South Asian Crowds that while living in comfy settings of foreign countries do get romantic when some one talk to them about India. Far away from country of their origin, they don’t feel the heat and dust of it caused by BJP-RSS cadre while imposing Hindutva on minorities and Dalits under government protection and the Diaspora often get swayed away by hollow lofty dictums of Modi.

On borders: Modi claimed that earlier governments had miserably failed to stop terrorist attacks in Kashmir as also the sporadic intrusions of Chinese Army into Indian territory. But he with his 56inches Seena (Chest) was the only competent leader to put end to such violations on our borders. While praising himself and condemning others he impliedly accused even an earlier NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee of BJP for their failure to hold the bull by the horn.

But it was shocking to watch that post Modi era saw augmentation of separatist’s disturbances within Kashmir as also Chinese army’s prying into Indian borders increased. From LOC in Kashmir, the Pak based terrorists have now expanded area of their operations to the Punjab border. Soon after he accomplished his self appointed goodwill mission to Pakistan on December 25 last year, India’s strategic Pathankot Air Base was attacked next month in January 2016. Earlier another Punjab Town Qadian had came under raid of Pak based terrorists.

More and more Indian soldiers now die on Kashmir border than before. Looking at Modi’s week kneed policy towards China and Pakistan, Indian opposition parties, as per media often mockingly ask Modi, “Kahan gaya woh 56-inch ka seena jab China ki fauj hamari seema mein ghus aati hain aur Pakistani humare sipahiyon pe firing karte hain?” (What happened to the 56-inch chest when the Chinese army entered our territory and Pakistan soldiers fired upon our soldiers). His foreign policy has become insignia of ‘much ado about nothing’, assert some political pundits.

On Development:

His supporters often appreciate extra ordinary large number of his foreign visits as grand success because of the red carpet reception given by those governments along Indian diaspora’s warm welcome to him. Factually speaking nothing beyond that has happened. Modi’s ‘Make in India’ plan didn’t take off as expected and so was the response of foreign investors to make substantial investments. Foreign Investors expect BJP government first to calibrate tax laws to their needs as also ensure congenial and peaceful climate for their investment to grow here safely. But government has failed on these scores as Indian Parliament is kept busy in sorting out humbug that BJP mobs and even some of their law makers have created in pursuit of RSS Hindutva agenda adopted by BJP.

Selling farmlands to foreign industrialists in Gujarat is not development, under Narendra Modi, Gujarat’s debt increased from Rs 36 crore to 3 lakh-crore. This was the real Gujarat Model unfolded by Hardik Patel the fire brand young opposition leader from his home state.

This “Suit-boot Government” is hobnobbing with rich and big business, requesting them to disclose their assets so as to convert their Black Money into White one. BJP rulers’ post election performance belied their pre election promise of removal of joblessness and poverty. Communal tension and violence engineered by violent fascist BJP crowds under government’s cover has added fuel to the fire.

Mixing religion with Politics

Cow bhakti (worship) now is being brought to centre stage of Indian polity by Hindutva activists to scare Muslims, Christians, Dalits, secular and liberal elements in society to get majority votes in important provincial polls due next early year. That is why RSS mob is allowed to kill any Muslim on suspicion of eating or carrying beef anywhere with impunity or Dalits in Modi’s home state of Gujarat could be stripped, beaten for skinning a dead cow.

Many feel that Modi ultimately would have to choose either between India a Secular democratic country or India a the Hindu Nation. At present he has been caught between devil and the deep blue sea. (To be Continued)
